Biography
Training: I train twice a day. Sessions range from Wrestling, BJJ, Crossfit, Boxing, Kickboxing, and MMA sparring. Usually we do some technique to start, then sparring, and I finish every practice with some type of burnout exercise to push my conditioning.
When and why did you start training for fighting? After high school in 1996, I started Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai after watching the old UFCs on video. My first favorite fighter was Marco Ruas because he was good at every aspect of the game, so I wanted to be like him.
What ranks and titles have you held? I am a black belt in BJJ under Henry Matamoros and Pedro Sauer. I am the XFO Light heavyweight champion. I have also won lots of BJJ and submission wrestling championships over the years.
Do you have any heroes? Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold, because (like his politics or not) he stands up for his views and refuses to follow party politics. Oh... and Chuck F'in Norris of course.
What is your favorite technique? Flying armbar - the greatest combination of technique and athleticism.
What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? It means everything... The UFC is the premier MMA show in the USA. Every fighter wants to fight in the UFC, just like every football player wants to play in the NFL. Plus, chicks tell me being an Ultimate Fighter sounds a lot hotter than Pride Fighter.
Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn? I have my BS in Biology/Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. I graduated Magna Cum Laude and was the biology department’s graduate of the year. Instead of using my intelligence and going to medical school, I decided to venture in a different area of employment...getting hit in the face for a living. Mom is so darn proud.
What was your job before you started fighting? Laboratory Technologist that screens biological samples for infectious diseases.
