Biography

TRAINING: A typical day of training consists of Strength & Conditioning in the morning. Fight team practice in the afternoon and mitt work & drills in the evening.

Thoughts on opponent, Norman Parke?
I am very excited for this fight! He is a well-rounded fighter and I know our styles will match up nicely. I know we will go out there have a technical war when we meet in the middle of the Octagon.

When and why did you start training for fighting? On Guam everyone grows up fighting. I always loved martial arts and wanted to get good at it so I started to train with my cousin in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA six years ago. A year later I made my pro debut. I come from an island of warriors. Being born a Chamorro, it is in our blood to fight, so it came natural to me.

What ranks and titles have you held? Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt, 2010 Abu Dhabi World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Champion, Gorilla Warfare Superfight Champion

Do you have any heroes?
God, Jesus Christ, my parents, Franklin and Loretta Cruz.

What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? It started with an island boy with a dream, and through hard work and sacrifice, it became reality. It means everything to me to have the opportunity from the UFC to be able to showcase my skills to the world in the greatest organization ever. It is all uphill from here.

Did you go to college and if so what degree did you earn?
I was attending the University of Guam studying Physical Education. It is my goal to finish in the near future.

What was your job before you started fighting?
I worked as a Power Plant Operator

Favorite grappling technique: All chokes and joint locks

Favorite Striking technique: All of my strikes that connect clean

•    TUF 15 competitor – broke toe in close loss to eventual finalist Al Iaquinta

•    Pro since 2007

•    Has finished all but one of his fights in the first round – 3 KOs, 3 submissions

•    All submissions via rear naked choke
