Yoshihiro Akiyama

Born of Korean descent in Osaka, Japan, Akiyama first made his name in the international sports world as a decorated black belt in judo who collected numerous titles. By 2004, Akiyama sought a new challenge in the world of MMA, and he made an immediate impact when he debuted with a first round win over former world heavyweight boxing champion Francois Botha. Over the next three years, Akiyama built a stellar reputation as one of the best fighters in the world, submitting Melvin Manhoef, knocking out Denis Kang, and engaging in battles with the likes of Kazushi Sakuraba and Kazuo Misaki.

TRAINING: I've been training a lot in physical and fighting methods, specifically focusing on how I can score enough points to win. From my past three matches in UFC, I was too stuck in my old ways and I wasn’t thinking about the result of the fight. Based on the reflections from that, I'm working steadily with Tsuyoshi Kohsaka (Former UFC fighter) and Yushin Okami (current UFC fighter). Also, I couldn't show my true strength in the past, especially for groundwork techniques. Now I'm studying how I should fight in the UFC from various angles by watching video, workouts and so on. I'll take a new and different way into the next fight.

Thoughts on opponent, Nate Marquardt? He is a very strong and fantastic fighter in every way.

When and why did you start training for fighting? After Judo, I wanted to be the world's most powerful man.
